The Angel of the North has quickly become the symbol of Newcastle and Gateshead. Situated alongside the busy A1 this impressive 20 metre high statue, making it the tallest sculpture in Britain, was designed and created by artist Antony Gormley. Over 200 tonnes of steel were used in the construction, making for a spectacular sight that can’t fail to prompt a reaction from all who see it.

Newcastle has plenty of museums and art galleries but the most noticeable addition in recent years is the BALTIC, Centre for Contemporary Art. Set in what was originally the Baltic Flour Mills and dating back to the 1950’s, it is now a leading centre for contemporary art. This exciting building is an ideal space for such a varied collection of art and is well worth a visit.

The most historical part of the city is undoubtedly Grainger Town. The area is named after Richard Grainger who was responsible for most of the design of the buildings back in the 1830’s and 1840’s. The architecture here is so splendid that it has been described as a ‘city of palaces’ and an incredible 40% of the buildings here are listed. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely strolling, taking in the architecture on route and stopping off to enjoy a drink or two at your own pace.

The Theatre Royal Newcastle has a well-deserved reputation for attracting top quality productions to the area. The annual programme incorporates varied performances from drama, opera, comedy, musicals, dance and cabaret. Many well-known names appear here on a regular basis and you can find out about all their forthcoming productions by taking a look at their website at

The area is also well known for its particularly fine shopping facilities. The vast Metro Centre at Gateshead boasts over 350 shops and numerous places to eat, giving you all the choice you could desire. Eldon Square in the centre of Newcastle and Monument Mall also have plenty to offer those in need of a little retail therapy, whilst not forgetting older venues like Grainger Market, a Grade 1 listed building dating back to 1835.
